Products

Built on peer-reviewed research, delivered ready to use

EXIOBASE

The full multi-regional input-output model: 200 products across 163 industries in 49 regions, with the economic and environmental accounts behind them. Suited to supply-chain analysis, footprinting and custom modelling.

Emission Factors

Ready-to-apply spend-based factors for greenhouse gas emissions, split by Scope 1, 2 and 3 and computed under the GHG Protocol Scope 3 Standard. Multiply a spend line by the factor to estimate the emissions behind it. Delivered as spreadsheets, in two datasets: Basic and Premium.

Impact Factors

Spend-based factors for environmental impacts beyond carbon: water withdrawal, water consumption and scarcity-weighted water consumption, land use, ecosystem quality and human health. Currently a beta.

Custom Solution

Bespoke work built on the model: custom impact factors for other environmental accounts, coupled national-accounts models, supply-chain analysis and software development. Tell us the use case and we will scope it.

Use Cases

Who uses the factors, and for what

Companies reporting Scope 3

Estimate upstream emissions from the spend data you already hold.

Find the hotspots across purchased goods, capital goods and services before collecting supplier data.

Fill the gaps that supplier data leaves, with a source you can cite.

Banks and investors

Map loans and investments to sector and country emissions where investee data is thin.

Screen a whole portfolio on one consistent basis for financed emissions under Scope 3 category 15.

Extend the same approach to water, land and ecosystem quality with the impact factors.

Consultancies and software providers

Embed the factors in your own tools and in work for clients.

One classification and one method across 49 regions, so results compare between clients and between years.

A published, peer-reviewed methodology behind every number, for when a client asks where it came from.

Standards

Named in the reporting standards

The GHG Protocol Scope 3 Standard recognises input-output factors of this kind, and the PCAF and PBAF standards name EXIOBASE. The reporting page covers the other frameworks and what the data supports for each.

GHG Protocol

The Scope 3 Standard recognises environmentally extended input-output factors for estimating value-chain emissions by industry or product category.

Scope 3 Standard, Box 7.1

PCAF

The PCAF Standard names EXIOBASE as a recognised database for estimating financed emissions under Scope 3 category 15.

PCAF Standard, Part A, p48

PBAF

The PBAF Biodiversity Footprinting Standard names EXIOBASE as a data source for financed biodiversity-impact footprinting.

PBAF Standard, p32

The model

Data foundation

EXIOBASE is an environmentally extended multi-regional input-output model. It maps who sells what to whom across the world economy and attaches emissions, water, land and material use to every sector in every region. The factors are read off that model, so each one can be traced back to the data it came from.

EXIOBASE is open data. Universities, research institutes, NGOs and environmental agencies can download the current release from Zenodo and use it freely. For any other use, enquire here.

Open data, kept current

EXIOBASE is free for universities, non-profit research institutes, environmental and social NGOs, and national and international environmental agencies. Every version is archived on Zenodo with its own DOI, so published analyses stay reproducible.

XIO Sustainability Analytics was founded by core developers of the model. It builds the spend-based emission and impact factors from EXIOBASE and keeps them current.

Non-commercial research use: download the current release from Zenodo. Any other use: enquire here.

Team

Founded by the people who build EXIOBASE

XIO Sustainability Analytics was founded in 2024 by core developers of EXIOBASE. The people who build the factors are the people who answer questions about them, and the methodology they follow is published and peer reviewed.
